The Sacrifices of the Lone Family, a Legacy of Commitment to the National Conference and to the People of Lolab

In the political scene of Jammu and Kashmir, the sacrifices made by the Lone family for the National Conference (NC) are distressing reminder of the courage and dedication required to serve the people amidst adversity. Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, a key figure in this narrative, entered politics in the late 1980s, a time when few were willing to contest in mainstream politics due to the rising surge of militancy. The late Mushtaq Ahmad Lone guided by his elder brother, Gh Mohiudin Lone, a visionary known as the mastermind of mainstream politics, Mushtaq took a bold step into a challenging political environment.
The political journey of Haji Mushtaq Ah Lone began during dangerous period marked by conflict and uncertainty. He fought and struggled despite the dangers, he emerged champion in his first electoral attempt, surprising his opponents and securing his place as the first Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Sogam for Lolab, following the legacy of the late Gh Nabi Sogami. The tenure of Haji Mushtaq Ahmad Lone was characterized by remarkable achievements that transformed the region. The lone’s commitment to connecting villages and areas with district headquarters was unparalleled. He advocated health initiatives, establishing Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Sub-District Hospital (SDH) and numerous health and wellness centers across Lolab. The vision of lone for education was equally transformative, as he ensured the establishment of primary schools in every halqa, middle schools in nearly every village and several high schools and higher secondary institutions and earned him the title of the “Revolutionary Man of Education and Health.” The aspirations of Haji Lone was extended beyond immediate needs he proposed a college for Lolab, a dream that was realized posthumously. The lone couldn’t make it possible to inaugurate with his own hands as he lost his life in Tekipora by an unfortunate incident while delivering a speech to before inaugurating higher secondary school, fulfilling his dream of advancing education in the region. Mushtaq Lone while giving his life still care of his people and his last words, urging his security not to open fire to protect the people, resonate deeply in the hearts of Tekipora’s residents, who regard him as an ideal figure who sacrificed himself for their safety.

The sacrifices of this family did not stop here and their heart were still beating for the party and for people in particular as following the mushtaq’s martyrdom, his nephew, Qaiser Jamshed Lone, took up the mantle of leadership as MLA in his late 20s. Qaiser Lone stand in the front for the people despite warnings from unknown gun man and others not to join the National Conference and mainstream politics, Qaiser remained unwavering in his commitment to the ideals of his family and the party. He understood the importance of continuing the legacy of “Khidmat-e-Khalaq” (service to the people) that Mushtaq had championed.
The Lone family faced further tragedy when another brother of Mushtaq was killed by unknown gun man while returning home to celebrate Eid with the community. Yet, their loyalty to the National Conference remained unshaken, even in the face of such profound loss. Qaiser Lone’s leadership has been marked by significant achievements, including the establishment of a college, a Sub-District Hospital, and an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for Lolab. The dedication of lone to the community has earned him a reputation as an honest, humble, and approachable leader, with many referring to him as the “Patriarch” or “Imam” of the region.
Qaiser has consistently prioritized the needs of his people over the past 14 years, ensuring that they are never left alone in their struggles. The recent victory in the 2024 elections, where he defeated his opponent from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by a margin of around 10,000 votes, is a testament to the trust and expectations the people of Lolab have in him. They look to him to fulfill his promises, including the completion of the dream project connecting Lolab with Sopore, the establishment of a maternity hospital, a mini-secretariat, and a university for the region.

The sacrifices of the Lone family are etched in the collective memory of Sogam and Lolab. Their commitment to the welfare of their people, even in the face of adversity, serves as an inspiration for future generations. As Qaiser Lone continues to lead, the hopes and dreams of the people of Lolab rest on his shoulders, and the legacy of his family’s sacrifices will undoubtedly guide him in fulfilling the aspirations of his community. In conclusion, the sacrifices of Mushtaq Ahmad Lone and his family are a powerful reminder of the worth of leadership and the profound impact one individual can have on a community. As the people of Lolab look to the future, they do so with the hope that the dreams of their leaders will be realized, ensuring a brighter tomorrow for all. The Lone family’s unwavering commitment to the National Conference and their continuing legacy of service to the people will continue to inspire generations to come.
