Ladakh: International Forest Day Celebrated at GDC Nobra

Department of Botany and Environmental Science, Govt. Degree College Nobra in collaboration with Forest Department Nobra organises International Forest Day on 20th March 2024 at Govt. Degree College Nobra. The event was attended by faculties and students of GDC Nobra and staff members of Forest Department. Dr Tsewang Motup, Principal GDC Nobra graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The programme begins with the formal welcome address on International Forest Day by Mrs Tsewang Lahmo, Assistant Professor Environmental Science. She also presented an overview of International forest day and its theme for this year ‘Forest and Innovation: new solution for a better world’.
Speaking on the occasion, forester Mr Sonam Wangyal presented the overview, historical background and importance of International Forest Day and highlighted the conservation work being executed by forest department in Nobra valley. Dr Konchok Dorjey, Assistant Professor of Botany, in his address, highlighted the role of plants and trees in maintaining ecosystem balance and survival of diverse life-forms present a forest ecosystem. He emphasized that forest represents a repository of life-forms and biodiversity, and conservation of a forest may contribute to conservation of biodiversity.
Chief Guest on the occasion Dr Tsewang Motup talked about the role of trees in conservation of wildlife in desert ecosystem of Ladakh. He emphasised on maximum plantation drive for conservation and promotion of forest and to develop an ecosystem. He encouraged students and teachers to act as green ambassador for society and future generation. He also highlighted the vision of Degree College Nobra to establish an arboretum in the college campus harbouring a repository of different indigenous and exotic trees species which will be of immense value in educational and research purposes.
It was followed by the inauguration of mega plantation drive programme in presence of worthy chief guest, officials and participants. Dr Motup planted a sapling of Pine tree as a symbolic gesture to begin the plantation drive. All the students, faculties and staff members of forest department actively participated in the plantation drive and planted more than hundred trees representing dofiierent species of Pine, Juniper, Willows, Polar, Russian olive and Tamarix provided by the Forest Department Nobra. During the event many students also express their views on forest day and conservation of trees and biodiversity. The programme ends with vote of thanks by Ms Razia Bano, botany student of GDC Nibra.
