Srinagar,Nov 28 : The government is analysing the situation to announce winter vacation for schools in Kashmir, Principal Secretary School Education Department, Bishwajit Kumar Singh said Saturday.

“ We are looking into it. The matter will be discussed in the department and winter vacations will be announced after taking proper feedback from the concerned officials,” he said.

The demand for the announcement of winter vacations in schools has become shriller given the rise in daily COVID-19 cases reported from J&K and the prevailing cold weather in Kashmir.

The local Meteorological Department has also predicted light to moderate snowfall in Kashmir and Ladakh on December 4 and 5.

“The mercury has already dropped to one degree and at times it goes to minus, giving a tough time to students who are called to schools at several places to attend the classes,” a parent said.

The Department of Education has started an enrollment drive in schools and students are asked to attend the community classes.

“ It is not possible for the students to attend classes under the open sky amid this freezing temperature.

The schools do not have proper infrastructure as well so that the students could attend their classes inside the classrooms after maintaining proper social distance,” said Nazir Ahmad, a teacher posted in the Kupwara district.

“ The COVID-19 cases are also on a rise. The department should consider the prevailing situation and announce vacations early,” he said.

Principal Secretary School Education Department acknowledged that the temperature has gone down in Kashmir and said that the matter would be taken up with the concerned director.

Usually, the concerned director submits a proposal to the administrative department for approval before the announcement of winter vacations for the schools.
