The State Election Commission (SEC) on 06th of March 2021 declared the polls of two District Development Council (DDC) seats as “null and void” after two women from Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PaK), married to locals from the Valley, contested the elections in December last year among which one was Soomia Sadaf from Drugmulla constituency.

According to officials the complaint was received which mentioned that both are residents of Muzaffarabad, PaK, and are illegal entrant into the country and therefore are not citizens of India,” officials said.

The SEC decided to stop counting of polls in both the constituencies following the complaints. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), in an order, directed deleting of both the names from the panchayat electoral rolls.

She is one of the women who had married Kashmiri men and came to Jammu and Kashmir under the 2010 amnesty policy by then chief minister Omar Abdullah. (KNS)
