Water shortage irks people of langate ; authorities in slumber

Langate : The tall claims of government for providing basic facilities to people seems hoax at ground level at least in Kupwara’s langate area.

In Langate assembly constituency people from different villages alleged that they are forced to drink contaminated water from Nallah, Pharoo and authorities could not provide suitable drinking water

Many villages in Langate constituency of Kupwara district are facing acute water scarcity with many people here drinking unhygienic water
Up in arms against government and Jalshakti Department, a long queue of woman and men was seen fetching water from a canal at Hanjishart village, barely 2 kms away from Kultoora village.

Aggrieved locals told kupwaratimes.com that they were facing acute shortage of water but the department despite being aware of the same has not bothered to restore the basic facility.

“There is no drinking water in our village and we are forced to drink contaminated water of canals which is unhygienic and health hazardous for us,” said Neelofar Gull of Kultoora Langate.

Another women from Guloora village Meema Beagum also complained of drinking water shortage.“We are being compelled to walk 3-4 kilometers everyday to fetch water from a canal here. Government has been promising us to provide drinking water to our village from a long time now, but nothing has happened so far in this regard,”

Gulnaza Begum of the village Kultoora while taking to kupwaratimes.com.”There is no drinking water facility in our area and we have been forced to drink water that gets accumulated in the paddy fields, while as the government launched a water supply scheme some 2 years back but it has never worked for us”

Similarly, thousands of people living in the area of Pharoo are facing drinking water shortage, the acute water scarcity in this area has become usual as authorities are taking no measures to address the problem.

When contacted Exn PHE Handwara Zubair Ahmad , he said,”that this year water resources such as streams, rivers and reservoirs dry up in summers due to high temperature which leads to water storage, I assure the people of area with in 10 days the matter will be resolved on fast track basis.

The residents appealed Kupwara Deputy Commissioner, Anshul Garg, to intervene and ensure restoration of water supply.
