Shaurya Gatha Complex Boosts Karnah’s Tourism Potential

Kupwara: The Shaurya Gatha Complex at SM Hill in Tangdhar is emerging as a major tourist attraction, significantly boosting tourism potential in the border region of Karnah in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Situated at an altitude of nearly 10,500 feet along the Line of Control (LoC), the complex, along with the scenic Sadhna Top, is drawing visitors from across the country with its unique blend of military history, Pahari culture and panoramic Himalayan views.

Since its inauguration in May, the Shaurya Gatha Complex has witnessed a steady rise in tourist footfall. The complex houses a War Museum displaying weapons, military equipment and exhibits from the 1947-48, 1965 and 1971 wars, besides showcasing the Indian Army’s role in safeguarding the nation’s borders. An adjoining War Memorial honours soldiers who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.

The Pahari Culture Centre offers visitors an insight into the language, traditions, music and customs of the Pahari community, adding a cultural dimension to the destination.

Nearby, the Sadhna Cafe has become a popular stop for tourists, offering local cuisine and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Local residents and tourism stakeholders say the development of the complex has created new opportunities for tourism and employment in the remote border area.

Among the visitors, Mohammad Yaseen from Anantnag described the complex as a remarkable destination. “The War Museum, the memorial and the breathtaking views from SM Hill make it a memorable experience. It is a place every Kashmiri should visit,” he said.

Rukhsana Bano from Handwara said she was impressed by the Pahari Culture Centre, which beautifully showcases the region’s heritage. “The facilities are excellent, and the surrounding landscape is simply stunning,” she added.

Aamir Ahmad from Srinagar said the combination of history, culture and natural beauty makes the destination unique. “We also enjoyed spending time at the Sadhna Cafe while taking in the panoramic mountain views,” he said.

Shabir Hussain from Baramulla said the initiative has immense potential to boost tourism in Karnah. “It will benefit local people by creating employment opportunities and encourage more visitors to explore this beautiful border region,” he said.

With increasing tourist arrivals, the Shaurya Gatha Complex is rapidly establishing itself as one of North Kashmir’s premier offbeat destinations, strengthening Karnah’s position on Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism map.
