Kupwara: Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday asserted that India should have adopted a more proactive diplomatic stance in easing tensions between Iran and the United States, rather than allowing space for Pakistan to take the initiative.
Speaking to media persons during his visit to Kupwara, Wani emphasized that India has historically been regarded as a non-aligned nation with strong credibility to mediate in global conflicts. However, he observed that New Delhi’s growing strategic proximity to Israel has constrained its ability to function as a neutral and effective facilitator in sensitive geopolitical matters.
First of all, we should have taken this step, as it was a responsibility expected from our country. We were once seen as a non-aligned nation, but now we seem to have fallen behind. Our ties with Israel have become a factor preventing us from making this move.
He also mentioned that it was encouraging to see efforts aimed at preventing a wider conflict. “It is a positive development that someone has stepped in to prevent both countries from heading toward nuclear war,” he said.
During his visit, Wani toured various parts of Kupwara district and interacted with local residents, patiently listening to their grievances and concerns, particularly those related to civic amenities and infrastructure.
The visit also comes in the backdrop of a recent fire incident that occurred during the intervening night, in which three buses were completely gutted while three others sustained partial damage. Expressing deep concern, Wani assured full support to the affected owners and drivers, stating that the administration would take necessary steps to provide relief and ensure timely assistance.
