Kupwara: An injured horse in Kupwara was provided medical treatment by the Animal Husbandry Department today, but the incident has once again highlighted the lack of a dedicated animal shelter house in the town.
The horse sustained injuries and was later treated by the Animal Husbandry Department. However, despite the injured animal being identified and its condition being shared on social media, its owner reportedly did not come forward to claim it, even after seeing the horse’s pictures online.
While the animal has received medical attention, a major concern remains over its safety and shelter after treatment. Kupwara Municipal Council reportedly does not have a dedicated shelter house for injured, abandoned or stray animals, raising questions about where such animals are supposed to be kept, particularly during the night.
The issue is not limited to this particular horse. Injured and abandoned animals are reported from the area from time to time, but in the absence of a proper shelter facility, their post-treatment care remains a challenge.
Kupwara residents have urged the authorities to establish a proper animal shelter house in Kupwara, where injured and abandoned animals can be kept safely and provided necessary care until they recover or are claimed by their owners.
The latest incident raises an important question for the authorities: If an injured animal has no owner willing to take responsibility and there is no shelter house available, where will the animal go after receiving treatment especially at night?
